Caring for an elder or a person with a long-term illness or disability

Are you caring for an elder or a person with a long-term illness or disability? Would you or someone you know like knowledge and support in that demanding ministry of presence?

Chronic Care Community Corps (4C) believes that communities can serve a vital role in supporting family members who are caring for elder loved ones with chronic or life-threatening illness. Whether you are a caregiver yourself or supporting others, these seminars provide you with skills and important information. No one should be alone on this caregiving journey. Ned Rimer from St. James’ Church, Arlington heads up 4C and is coordinating our seminar.

4C trains and mobilizes people in the community to support their friends, co-workers, or others who are caring for older adults with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Once trained, Corps members are able to offer more meaningful support, as defined by the caregiver, through listening, inquiry, perspective taking, goal setting, and resource identification … 4C seminars equip participants with tools, strategies, and information to proactively support the caregivers they know. Seminar participants are trained to listen carefully and to practice their inquiry skills rather than simply offering advice. This helps participants learn to better understand the challenges facing a caregiver and identify strategies and resources helpful to his or her unique situation.

Cost for the three-Monday seminar (Nov. 7, 14, and 21) is minimal: $50. You pay it forward to others who will benefit from this seminar in future.

Spiritual Wellness and LGBT Community

This is an ecumenical gathering for the LGBT community and allies to strengthen and celebrate connections between spiritual wellness and life in community. Rebecca Voelkel, Director of the Institute for Welcoming Resources and Faith Work for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and Katerine Ragsdale, President of EDS, are keynote presenters. Day includes a wonderful variety of workshops, worship, lunch and time to connect with one another.

Small Church Summit on Oct. 16

“Called to Transformation: From Survival to Vitality in Small Churches”

A summit for small churches on Saturday, October 16, 8:45 AM-2:30 PM at St. Peter’s in Weston, MA.

Growing out of the Small Church Summit held in 2008 and workshops at last year’s Diocesan Resource Day, the upcoming program will feature time in the morning for small group work and networking as well as two morning presentations: one by the Rev. Liz McGill (program manager for the EDSConnect program for small churches) and one on developing ministry teams by the Rev. Helen Trainor, a deacon and attorney with the Legal Aid Justice Center in Virginia. Afternoon workshops will follow lunch.

Mindfulness Meditation Group on Thursdays

Many members of COS seek ways to deepen their own spiritual life beyond the weekly liturgy and their own personal and family practices. This fall a mindfulness meditation group is taking place in the parish hall on Thursday evenings from 7:30-8:45. Led by COS member and long-time meditation practitioner Jeff Howlett, this is a gentle, simple practice that anyone can learn. Mindfulness is a way of relating directly to what is happening in your life. It is widely used for stress relief and as a way of tapping into your own inner strength and resources. Beginners are welcome and this is a group for adults. Bring a friend and some worries you’d like to leave behind! Drop in when you can or come regularly. No need to sit cross-legged but bring a pillow if you’d like to sit on the floor! We’ll be meeting every Thursday through November 12.
