Reflections of Our Rector

On October 27, we celebrated “Claim Your Church Sunday.”  We welcome four people who’ve decided to make Church of Our Saviour their spiritual community.  Pat, Gif, Kate and Kristin have been coming for some time, and it was wonderful to have a chance to formally welcome them.

So far this year, over 75 people have visited Church of Our Saviour for the first time.  I am humbled by the gift God has given us through their presence. The 53rd chapter of the Rule of St. Benedict says,

“Let all guests who arrive be received like Christ, for He is going to say,
“I came as a guest, and you received Me” (Matt. 25:35).

Everyone who comes to our door is potentially an instrument of the Holy Spirit, the face of Christ in disguise.  Everyone who comes to our door has something unique to teach us, and amazing gifts God can use to transform our world.

We now face the wonderful challenge of getting to know each other!  On Claim You Church Sunday, I offered an exercised proposed by Martin Smith at a retreat he gave at Adelynrood Retreat Center this summer.  He said that since God often transforms us through what we love, we might make an A-Z inventory of those things.  As I reflected on Martin Smith’s words, I realized that the things we love are a unique to each of us, like a fingerprint.  And so we might also use these lists of loves to get to know each other better.

Some parishioners were kind enough to share their inventories in this newsletter.  I hope we will each take time to read these, and get to know each other better.  And I hope that more of you will be inspired to create your own list of loves and send it for publication in future issues of this newsletter.

I hope that in the year to come, we will take some time to get to know each other better.  Whether you’ve been here a long time or whether (like me) you’re relatively new, we can always get to know each other better  Please let me know your ideas for getting to know each other in a more intentional way.

Yours in Christ,

P.S. On Sun. Nov. 17, our 10am service will be an all-ages service.  Some of the youth will be taking on new leadership roles in worship.  Thanks to the youth for offering your gifts!
